I haven’t posted about cannabis reform in a while—honestly, it’s exhausting seeing the same conversations play out without progress. But the recent move by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), representing 400,000 professionals, caught my attention. The AICPA is urging the IRS to update its 280E tax code, which unfairly penalizes cannabis businesses by denying them basic deductions. This follows the AMA’s support for medicinal cannabis research and decriminalization earlier this year.
With 47 states already having legalized cannabis in some form, and only Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, and American Samoa holding out, why is the federal government still debating rescheduling? Doctors, accountants, and the vast majority of the public are ready for change. It’s past time for the federal government to stop stalling and listen to the will of the people
